Dolphins in Tenerife

Of course you are able to see Dolphins in captivity at Loro Parque or Aqualand
performing tricks in pre prepared shows. However, at the parks, you are not
able to appreciate them in their own environment. How about seeing them
WILD at nature… in their true natural habitat?

The sea just off the coast of Tenerife is home to a wide variety of dolphins,
mostly common and bottlenose dolphins. If you visit Tenerife and miss the
opportunity to go on a boat trip to watch sea mammals, it is like going to Paris
and not visiting the Eiffel Tower. Tenerife is the best place in Europe (and one
of the best in the world) to watch whales and dolphins. There are at least 29
known species of cetaceans in Tenerife, which is almost one third of the worlds
known species.

Dolphins are often regarded as one of Earth’s most intelligent animals, and
in Tenerife, they live up to their name. Every day they swim from one fish-
farm to another, looking for an easy meal. They do not eat the fish inside the
farm, but there is a lot of fish-food that escapes from the farms, attracting (free)

fish and these in turn attract the dolphins. It is a fascinating story, and it is
definitely worth going on a trip to watch whales and dolphins the next time
that you visit Tenerife.

Here is a video made up of photographs taken from Eden Catamaran, it shows
one of our many dolphin encounters. This was a large group that came close to
the boat and started PLAYING WITH IT, jumping beside and in front of it. It was
a marvellous experience which you could also enjoy!
